Another disappointing day on 40m! Despite valiant efforts by many local and overseas stations, the QSOs were few and far between. 24 logs were submitted – many thanks to all who took the trouble to send in their logs – these logs contained a total of 373 QSOs, just under half of which we were able to cross-check. Excluding uniques, the logs contained 31 EI/GI stations and 38 overseas stations.
Short-skip propagation on 40m has been poor for many years, with the F2 Critical Frequency remaining below 7 MHz for much of the time. This mostly affects inter-EI/GI activity which is an important element of a counties contest. A few EI/GI stations logged 4 county multipliers, but most local stations had to settle for just 1 or 2 county multipliers. Our overseas contesters saved the day, and not for the first time! Propagation is not of course fixed, and we can hope for an improvement in 40m conditions over the next few years. When the 40m Counties Contests were introduced in 2014, EI & GI stations were able to log 25+ counties. So, while it is tempting to drop these single-band 40m contests, we will put our faith in the solar cycle and leave them in the calendar for the time being. | |||||
