IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 24th May 2020

Silent Key

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Tom O’Brien EI5CA, Radarc na Coille, Shannon, Co. Clare. Tom passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday 20th May. He was a much respected and valued member of the Limerick Clare Amateur Radio Club. One of life’s gentlemen, his enthusiasm and dedication to Amateur Radio was infectious. CW was his favourite mode of operation. Tom was a keen SOTA operator in both in EI and France. He was also a very keen cyclist - competing in many road races. Gardening was also one of Tom’s passions. Originally from Cloyne, Co. Cork Tom studied for his PMG at the Cork Radio Telegraph Institute where he graduated in the 1964. Having spent some years as a Marine Radio Officer, he joined Infotronics in Shannon and in 1972 he joined what is now the Irish Aviation Authority where he worked in the Radar Division in Shannon Airport.

We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Christine, daughter Margaret and to the extended families. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. May he rest in peace.

Shannon Basic Radio Club Nets

A reminder that the Shannon Basin Radio Club is now having a net on Top Band every Monday evening at 20:00 Local on 1.916. The 80 meters net has changed frequency to be on Wednesday evenings on 3.720 plus or minus qrm at 20:00 and the 2 meter net is on Thursday evenings at 20:00 local. There has been a lot of interest in the nets over the last couple of weeks and everyone is welcome to join in. See the clubs Facebook page and www.sbrc.ie for more details.

GACW (Grupo Argentino de CW)

The GACW is a CW contest which is held every second weekend of June for a continuous period of 24 hours. This year it will run from 1500 UTC 13th June to 1500 UTC 14th June. For more information about the contest and its rules please visit contest.com.ar/gacw-wwsa

IOTA Contest

A reminder that RSGB have announced that the annual Islands on the Air Contest, which takes place over the last full weekend of July (25th / 26th July), will go ahead this year, however, in line with 'Stay at Home' guidance to minimise the impact of Covid-19, the 2020 contest will be exclusively for Single Operators using their home stations. Also, RSGB will not be awarding trophies this year, but downloadable certificates will be available to winners. Another rules amendment for 2020 is that the sending of a signal report in every QSO is mandatory, a change from the 2019 rules which indicated that a signal report was optional.

50 MHz allocation in Germany

The Federal Network Agency has made a preliminary provisional implementation of the WRC results for the 6m band in message 111 from the May 6 official journal 08/2020. This new regulatory development is very positive for amateur radio and is the result of a series of discussions between the Bundeswehr (Military) primary user and the DARC's Frequency Management Unit (DK4VW and DF2ZC).
