Contest Logs
Stations in at least 24 counties were active during last Sunday's IRTS 40 metres Counties Contest. Contesters who have not yet submitted logs are asked to send their log to “contestmanager /at/ irts /dot/ ie” as soon as possible. See www.irts.ie/logs for a list of logs received to date.
Amateur Station Licence Examination
We wish to remind all potential candidates that the next Amateur Station Licence Examination is on Thursday 15th November in the ComReg Offices in Dublin. Some applications have already been received. As places are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis, those intending to sit the examination should apply soon. Full details, including entry procedure, examination fee and how to pay the fee online are available at www.irts.ie/exam
Please note that it is necessary to download the application form from the web site and forward the completed form and the appropriate fee so as to secure a place for the examination. It is important to note that even if you pay the fee online you must still complete and forward the application form. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Thursday 1st November.
Shannon Basin Radio Club
The Shannon Basin Radio Club is holding a meeting in the Roscommon Sub-Aqua Club House in Roscommon Town on Wednesday 7th November at 20:30.
Steve EI5DD will be in attendance and will give a talk and demonstration on DMR. Anyone interested in DMR is welcome to attend. Please see www.shannonbasinradioclub.com for details.
South Dublin Radio Club
SDR is taking advantage of an initiative being run by the RTE Ray D'Arcy show by making their planned regular club night, on Tuesday 23rd October, an open night whereby prospective members can drop in.
For the open night itself SDR are asking club members to bring along projects or equipment which showcase the hobby. They plan to set up individual stations where visitors can try things out.
Limerick Radio Club
There was a good attendance of LRC members for the first meeting after the summer break. Unfortunately the speaker for the night was unable to attend so the talk was postponed to a later date. In any case there were plenty of updates and issues to be discussed to fill the evening.
The club activated the EI100MCV call sign from Shannon AirAdventure Centre on Saturday 13th October. Bands 20, 30 and 40 metres yielded a total of 161 QSOs on CW and SSB. Thanks to Harry EI2KL, Brendan EI0CZ, Mike EI2IX Michael EI3KO, Simon EI7ALB and SWL Alan who helped set up and operate the station. Not forgetting Jane of Shannon AirAdventure who continuously plied them with refreshments.
A date for your diary is Sunday March 10th 2019, when LRC will hold it's annual Rally in the Radisson Blu Hotel on the Ennis Road.
Dundalk Amateur Radio Society
A reminder that the Dundalk Amateur Radio Society are activating a Special Event Station EI100SSD to commemorate the sinking of the S.S. Dundalk which occured 14th October 1918. Operational frequencies will be posted by the usual means. Full details about the Special Event Station can be found on the EI100SSD QRZ.com web page, including historical information about the story of the sinking of the SS Dundalk.
Latvia`s 100th birthday
The special amateur radio callsign prefix YL100 has been created to celebrate Latvia's 100th birthday. On 18 November 2018 Latvia will celebrate this centenary. Five different callsigns will be used between the 1st to the 18th November with this YL100 prefix, one from each of 4 Latvia's historical regions and the fifth from the capital city Riga. The callsigns are YL100K, YL100L, YL100R, YL100V, and YL100Z. These callsigns will be operated by multiple radio amateurs from the related regions. Special awards for working YL100 stations on different bands and modes will be issued.
DX News
Jorge CT1BOL will be active holiday style from Principe Island (IOTA reference AF-044) using the callsign S9CT from 24th – 29th October. For DXCC purposes this will count for the entity of Sao Tome and Principe. The location is off the west coast of Africa just north of the equator.
A multi-national team will be QRV from Ducie Island as VP6D. They will be on all bands CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8. Full detail are on the website www.vp6d.com The IOTA reference is OC-182.
Thierry F6CUK will sign FJ/F6CUK from the Caribbean island of St Barthelemy from 21st October – 1st November. This is a holiday style operation on all bands CW and SSB. QSL via Club Log OQRS.
Five Slovenian amateurs will operate as XT2SZZ from Burkina Faso from 22nd – 30th October. This will include an entry in the CQ WW DX Contest. QSL manager is S59ZZ.
John W2GD will reactivate his P40W callsign from the island of Aruba from 23rd – 29th October. QSL direct to N2MM.
