IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 14th October 2018
Silent Key A.D. Patterson (Barney) GI3KYP / EI4BC
Barney, a native of Delgany, Co Wicklow, and a long-time Belfast resident, was a skilled and patient mentor to many newly-licensed amateurs in the 1960s and 70s. He was RSGB President in 1967 and IRTS President in 1971-1972. Barney was the only person to have been president of both societies.
His Funeral Service will be held, tomorrow, Monday 15th October at 1.00 p.m. in Roselawn Crematorium, Belfast BT5 7TZ - on the Ballygowan Road, south of Belfast City.
IRTS extends its deepest sympathies to his wife Anne, and his children Alec, Janet, Hilary and Claire.

Amateur Station Licence Examination
We wish to remind all potential candidates that the next Amateur Station Licence Examination is on Thursday 15th November in the ComReg Offices in Dublin. Some applications have already been received. As places are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis, those intending to sit the examination should apply soon. Full details, including entry procedure, examination fee and how to pay the fee online are available at www.irts.ie/exam
Please note that it is necessary to download the application form from the web site and forward the completed form and the appropriate fee so as to secure a place for the examination. It is important to note that even if you pay the fee online you must still complete and forward the application form. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Thursday 1st November.
Dundalk Amateur Radio Society
The Dundalk Amateur Radio Society are activating a Special Event Station EI100SSD to commemorate the sinking of the S.S. Dundalk which occured 14th October 1918. Operational frequencies will be posted by the usual means. Full details about the Special Event Station can be found on the EI100SSD QRZ.com web page, including historical information about the story of the sinking of the SS Dundalk.
Tipperary Amateur Radio Group
The next meeting of the group will take place in The Park Hotel, Clonmel on Thursday 18th October at 8.30pm. New members or anyone interested in amateur radio are very welcome.

JOTA (Jamboree on the Air)
A reminder that there will be a JOTA event in the Larch Hill International Scout Centre Dublin over the weekend of 20th and 21st of October. Any club or individual willing to assist in setting up or operating a station from the event please contact Brian EI8IU on 086 1057325.
EchoLink now connected to Irish DMR Network
The Irish digital radio community continues to grow with more stations registering for DMR numbers every month. New digital repeaters and gateways have been established around Ireland to allow various users talk to each other.
One of the latest improvements to be made to the DMR network has been the establishment of a link to the Echolink network by John Anderson MI0AAZ. Any stations connected to MI0AAZ-L on the Echolink network will now connect to Talk Group 2724 on the Irish DMR network.
This is an excellent way for those who are unsure about digital radio to connect to users on the DMR network so that they can ask questions and to see what the audio sounds like.
Shannon Basin Radio Club
A reminder that the shannon basin radio club holds a net on 145.350 every thursday between 20.00 and 20.30. The past few weeks have proved very successful for the new net. Both members and non-members are welcome to join in with the aim of promoting the use of 2 meters.
ON4EI is Returning
From 21st to 31st October, Olivier ON4EI, is back again in Ireland to operate EI8GQB and EI7T during the CQ WW DX SSB contest which will be taking place on the 27th and 28th October. Olivier will use mainly green energy, based on solar panels and a wind generator during this period.
DX News
DS4NMJ will be active from the Korean Antarctic Base on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands until the end of the year. He is using the callsign DT8A and is mainly on CW and FT8. QSL manager is HL2FDW.
JH4RHF will be QRV as XV9RH in Vietnam until 16th October. This is a spare time operation and QSLs go via OE1ZKC.
A team of three Japanese operators will be active as ZL7X from the Chatham Islands from 16th until 22nd October. They will be on all bands 160 - 10m with the focus on low band CW. QSL manager is JA0VSH.
Five English amateurs will sign VK9XG from Christmas Island from 17th - 29th October. They will be QRV on all bands CW, SSB and FT8. QSL via Club Log OQRS.
Bertrand DF3FS will operate as TU5MH in the Ivory Coast from 20th - 29th October. QSL via his home call and logs will also be uploaded to Logbook of The World.
