IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 31st May 2015
Silent Key – John (Jeff) Walsh EI6CW
The death has occurred on Monday May 25th of John (Jeff) Walsh EI6CW. Jeff was a member of Skerries Radio Club, long time member of IRTS and a retired radio officer. Funeral took place on Thursday 28th May.
May he rest in peace.
IRTS CW Field Day
The next IRTS contest is CW Field Day, which takes place next weekend 6th and 7th June. A number of IARU Region 1 countries hold CW field day contests over the same weekend. The contest runs for 24 hours from 15:00 UTC on Saturday. See www.irts.ie/contests for full details.
Cork Radio Club
Cork Radio Club will meet on Wednesday next June 3rd in Carrigtwohill Community Centre at 2030. Long-time digital modes experimenter Don Kelly EI8DJ will give a talk on Digital voice for HF.Visitors and new members will be made very welcome. IRTS Committee and Officers
At a recent committee meeting, three members of the society were co-opted to the committee - they are Ger EI4GXB, Paul EI5KI and Dave EI6AL. Also at the meeting it was agreed that Dave EI6AL would have the dual role of Treasurer and Membership Records Officer. IRTS AGM 2015 Awards, Trophies & Cups

Amongst the awards presented was the Kevin Freeny trophy awarded to Daniel Cussen EI9FHB, the EI7IQ National 6 meter Shield awarded to Dave Deane EI9FBB, the EI7IQ National 4 metre Shield awarded to Tom Cocking EI4DQ.
2m Nets
Fingal Radio Club and Dermot EI2HD continue their 2m call-in on Wednesday and every Wednesday at 7p.m. Please try and give your support by getting on the air. Keep 2metres alive. The frequency is 145.7625MHz, CTCSS 88.5KHz on the Dublin repeater.
SEARG will continue their 2m net on Tuesday nights after the IRTS weekly news. This is to promote the use of the band, which has seen a decline in use. The intended frequency used is 145.400MHz and net has had many stations calling in since its introduction. Everyone welcome to join in.
DX News
Bob PB5X will be holidaying on the Maltese island of Gozo from 1stto 8th June. He will use the callsign 9H3A and will focus on the WARC bands. QSLs go via his home call.
Ken KH6QJ will be QRV from Christmas Island from 3rd to 8th June using the callsign T32AZ. He will be on the HF bands plus 6m CW and SSB.
The well-known DXer Sigi DL7DF, along with DJ6TF, DK1BT and DL7UFR, will operate as OX/homecall from Greenland from 3rd to 12th June. They will operate all bands 160 – 6m on CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31.
Nobby G0VJG will sign 8Q7CQ from the Maldives from 5th to 18th June. While he will be QRV on the HF bands he will also hope to work many stations on 6m. QSL Manager is G4DFI.
South Africa New 8m Band
Amateur radio operators in South Africa have been allocated a new 8metre band, 40.675 to 40.685MHz for propagation studies. The allocation is for up to 400W and all emissions are permitted except pulse and fast scan TV.
The power limits for most of the other amateur bands have been raised to 1kW for A licensees and the 160m band has been extended up to 2MHz.
“Electra” Back on Air
The yacht “Electra” will be activated on June 6th and 7th in conjunction with the Museum Ships Weekend celebrating Marconi’s contribution to radio. The special event callsign is II4MB.
