Silent Key - Tom EI6K

The death has occurred of Tom Fay EI6K, Artane, Dublin on Sunday 21st December 2014. Tom is survived by his loving wife Mae, his children and his son Tony EI6EQB. Tom retired in 1992 having worked with the Irish Press in the Wire Room and previously trained as a Radio Officer in 1948. Tom was a member of North Dublin Radio Club.

Funeral took place on Tuesday 23rd December to Glasnevin Crematorium.

May he rest in peace.


IRTS 80metres Counties Contest

IRTS 80 metres Counties Contest takes place on New Year’s Day, Thursday 1st January 2015, from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC. Modes are SSB only or SSB and CW, there are fixed and portable sections and a section for listeners. See the web site at www.irts.ie/contests for the contest rules, and note in particular the rule about permitted frequencies for this contest.


Final VHF Squares

Steve EI5DD is requesting that you forward to him the final VHF squares totals to be published in the 2014 VHF Squares Table on the IRTS website. All submissions are welcome.

Shannon Basin Radio Club

The Shannon Basin Radio Club will be holding its AGM in Hannons Hotel Roscommon on Friday the 16th January at 20:30. As there is a full adgenda, all members are requested to attend and anyone wishing to join the club is very welcome. DX News

John 9H5G will be travelling in the Bahamas area during January. There are several different IOTA island references in the Bahamas and John hopes to activate NA-001, NA-113, NA-054 and NA-048 using the callsign 9H5G/C6A. His QSL manager is NI5DX.

Wayne KK6BT will operate as FO/KK6BT from Bora Bora (IOTA OC-067) in French Polynesia from 2 – 4 January. He then moves to the Austral Islands (IOTA OC-114) from 5 – 11 January. The QSL manager is KE8G and logs will also be uploaded to Logbook of The World.

In the first few months of 2015 several rare DXCC entities will be available on the bands. Look out for Navassa Island, Cocos Islands, Juan Fernandez Island and Spratley Islands amongst others. It looks as if 2015 will be another good year for the DXers.

For those using the ARRL Logbook of the World service, the following DX has uploaded in the past couple of weeks or so:

V47T Saint Kitts and Nevis VP8KF Falkland Islands TY1AA Benin (a big dxpedition in September 2014) ET3AA Ethiopia 5R8M Madagascar (a major dxpedition in October 2014) ZK3E Tokelau

And, if you paid for a QSL via the online OQRS system, you might also have received LoTW confirmation from the VU4KV November dxpedition to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.


Irishman in Antarctic Activation

The RRS James Clark Ross is due to be at Rothera Base,Antarctica from 27th December for, initially, four nights. Danny McFadden, EI8JU,is the new Winter Comms Manager for the base and will be there for the next year or so. He is keen to operate when time allows which is more likely to be towards the end of the season and over the winter months. Danny also has the call VP8DOU which he may also use whilst down south.


Phoenix Amateur Radio Club

The first 2015 rally is the annual Phoenix Amateur Radio Club rally, which takes places as usual in the Coolmine Community School, near Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, on Sunday 15th February.
