IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 23rd September 2012


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

After the group’s very successful outing to the Inistioge Vintage Rally in August SEARG have been invited by IVETA (Irish Vintage Engine & Tractor Association) to take part in the National IVETA Indoor Show which takes place on the 14th October in the Cavan Equestrian Centre which is just on the outskirts of Cavan town. We will be putting on a display of old type radios and amateur radio gear from times gone past. We will also be running a station from the event and in keeping with the theme of the event we will be using CW with the call EI2WRC/P. Any amateurs in the area of the event who would like to drop in and use the station is very welcome to do so. The current sessions of theory classes will come to an end on Wednesday the 26th September. The 4th of October is fast approaching for all those sitting the exam and SEARG would like to wish all the candidates sitting the exam the very best of luck and a special message of good luck to the “class of 2012” who have done the theory course with us. We look forward to having that much awaited first QSO with all of you soon. SEARG hope to run further classes in the near future if demand is great enough.

The next monthly meeting of the club will take place in Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford at 8.30 p.m. on Monday the 24th September. The meeting will be preceded by a committee meeting at 8.00 pm. New members are always welcome.


Cork Radio Club

Cork Radio Club will meet on Tuesday next, September 25th at the Community Centre in Carrigtwohill at 8.30pm. All amateurs and Shortwave Listeners very welcome. Enquiries to Jeremy EI5GM on 083-3317710 .


South Dublin Radio Club – Saorview

Talk on Saorview Tuesday 25th of September. With only a matter of days until analogue TV transmissions cease in Ireland, South Dublin Radio Club will be again giving a public talk on Saorview and what people need to do before October 24th. With nearly 200,000 households not yet ready, facing possible loss of TV channels now is the time to inform and help neighbours and relatives with this technology challenge.

South Dublin radio club will be giving a talk, a demonstration and answering questions on what is happening and what new channels and equipment are available. The talk will also be useful for those who want to save money by switching from pay TV providers to the free Saorview platform.


Dundalk Amateur Radio Society, EI7DAR

Radio Theory Classes will commence Monday 5th November at DAR Society premises ‘Larkin House’, 113, Castletown Road, Dundalk, for preparation to sit the radio theory exam early in 2013. Tuition places are strictly limited and intending candidates are encouraged to enrol at the earliest opportunity. Tuition will involve approximately 20 weeks class attendance and an investment of €100 is required. Open nights to find out more information and to enrol on the course will be held October 3rd, October 17th, October 31st. All are welcome to enrol and this will be a fun learning experience. DX News

Further to last week’s mention of possible activity from the Republic of South Sudan two stations are now active on the bands. Jim KQ7I is now on the air as Z81A and Diya YI1DZ is signing Z81D. QSL Z81A via K7GSE and Z81D via OM3JW.

On the evening of 17 September a station signing Z60K started up on 20m SSB. This station is operating from the Republic of Kosovo. Among the international operators are well known calls such as Martti OH2BH, Nigel G3TXF and Bob MD0CCE. At the time of writing it is unclear if this station will count as a new entity for DXCC.

A multi-national team will activate Conway Reef in the South Pacific starting 26 September until 5 October. The callsign will be 3D2C and QSLs go via YT1AD. The IOTA reference for this one is OC-112.

Martin G3ZAY and Rob M0VFC are on the way to Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic. They hope to arrive there around 27 September and be active until 4 October. They will use the callsign ZD9UW and operate on CW, SSB and RTTY. IOTA reference is AF-029.

The well-travelled DXer Willi DJ7RJ will be QRV from Reunion Island as FR/DJ7RJ from 26 September until 21 October. He plans to be active on all bands 160-10m CW and SSB.


IRTS Shop update

Our friends at RSGB the Society has agreed to give a 10% discount to IRTS members on purchases from the RSGB Shop. IRTS members should select the “Non members Price” before placing the order and then enter the special IRTS Discount Code during the checkout process. At this point the 10% discount will be calculated. IRTS members, who are also RSGB members, should continue to select the “RSGB Member’s Price” to get the RSGB Member’s discount and not use the IRTS Discount Code. It is not possible to obtain both discounts! The IRTS Discount Code will change from time to time and will be published for members in Echo Ireland. Just follow the ‘Book Sales’ link on the IRTS website.
