IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday October 21st 2007

Jamboree on the Air is taking place this weekend.

JOTA as it is known is the largest scouting event in the world, and it is expected that 500,000 participants are involved this year. A number of stations are in operation around the country and your are asked to call in and support the event.


Shannon Basin Radio Club Sprint Challenge

The Shannon Basin Radio club is again running its annual one-day Open, Fixed, Challenge for EI residents. This challenge is open to all licensed operators and short wave listeners, and will be held on the 4th of November 2007 from 14:00 to 18:00 Hours.

The purpose of the challenge is to encourage radio operators and short wave listeners to be active on the H.F bands. The challenge will have three modes of operation, and the winner in each mode will be awarded with the following.

The Lough Allen Shield will be awarded to the highest score in SSB. The Lough Ree Shield will be awarded to the highest score in CW (A1A). The Lough Derg Shield will be awarded to the highest score for SWL.

The above winners will also receive a personal trophy.

CQIR

Logs for the recent CQIR Contest are continuing to arrive, with more than 140 received to date. Note that the latest date for submission of logs is 31st October.

In addition to the list of logs received and provisional eligibility for draw entries, the IRTS web site is now showing the ancestry of the Overseas Irish entries, as well as the "soapbox comments" included with the log entries. For contesters and non-contesters alike, these make interesting reading! The Home Page at www.irts.ie has links to the CQIR pages.


Foyle and District Amateur Radio Club

Foyle & District ARC play host to GB75PW, the special event station to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Practical Wireless magazine. The club has the added advantage of having the ranks of their operators joined by Rob Mannion, editor of the magazine. Operation is expected to take place on a number of HF bands and also on 2 metres.


Fingal Radio Club

Fingal Radio Club held their AGM recently at their meeting rooms in Erin’s Isle GAA complex in Finglas. A good attendance was had with a new committee duly voted in on the night.

The committee for 2007-2008 are as follows: Chairman is Gerry Birkhead EI9DZ, Secretary is Aidan Murphy EI5HW and Treasurer is Chris Yeates EI7AAB.

The outgoing treasurer Sean Linehan EI7CV was thanked for his sterling work throughout the year, and also for his culinary skills with his now infamous home-made Christmas cooking which formed the focal point for the clubs annual Christmas Dinner.

This year, the George Stritch Memorial Shield was awarded back to ALL members of the club, as opposed to any individual member.


Upcoming Rallies

The Foyle and District Rally will take place on Sunday the 4th of November 2007 at the White Horse Hotel, Derry. Much equipment will be on display including a raffle for a Yaesu FT-1802M. Doors open at 11.30 a.m. for disabled access and noon for general access. Admission is 2 Pounds or 3 Euro and children admitted free. Talk-in is on S22 (145.550 MHz).
