IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday March 20th 2005


IRTS AGM and Awards

The 73rd Annual General Meeting of the Irish Radio Transmitters Society took place on the 13th of March last in Limerick. The event was preceded with the Annual Dinner on the Saturday Night in the Greenhills Hotel and a good night was had by all. The rally was hosted by the Limerick Radio Club and held in conjunction with the rally. The AGM was well attended and involved discussions by members of the current issues affecting radio experimenters in Ireland. The meeting was followed by the presentation of awards.

The following awards were presented at the AGM:

The Pete Daly Cup for the CW Field Day Open Section went to the East Cork Radio Group EI7M. The cup was previously held by EI9E. The Paddy Smyth Cup for the Restricted Section of the contest went to The Shannon Basin Radio Club EI2SBC. This was previously held by EI7GY.

The Paddy Daly Microphone for the SSB Field Day Open Section went to EI9E. This was previously held by EI1C. The IRTS HF Shield for the Restricted Section went to EI2SBC and was previously held by EI1DD.

The Thomond Shield for the VHF Field Day Open Section went to EI7M. This was previously held by EI9E. The IRTS VHF shield for the VHF/UHF Field Day Restricted Section stayed with EI7DAR.

The EI7IQ 6 Metre National Shield was retained by EI2JD and the EI7IQ 4 Metre National Shield was again retained by EI3IO for the third year running. The Slievenamon Trophy for 70 cms FM operation was retained by EI2HI for the 4th year running.

Limerick Radio Club

The Limerick Radio Club would like to thank everybody for their support last weekend. Both the Pre AGM dinner and the Rally were a huge success.

There was a great atmosphere, plenty of money exchanged hands and all the traders were very happy with the day. Paul EI6FE would thank all members of LRC who helped out over the two days, especially Richard Cullinan EI8JE for the powerpoint presentation shown during the AGM Dinner and to Paddy Smith EI8GY and XYL Mary for their tireless work during the day for the raffle. More news will be forthcoming soon. Again big thanks from all the members of LRC to those who supported the rally and made it such a memorable day.

The 2006 Limerick Rally will be held on Sunday the 12th of March 2006.


EI Counties Contest

Listeners are reminded that the Spring leg of the EI Counties Contest will take place on Easter Monday, the 28th of March between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. Listeners are encouraged to get involved in the event. Even if you are not operating at a club station you can operate from your own QTH in one of the fixed categories.

Vintage Radio Museum

Tony, EI5EM has designed a new webpage for "Ye Olde Hurdy Gurdy Vintage Radio Museum", located in the Martello tower in Howth. The new website has photographs of some of the technical and amusing exhibits from the Museum. The address of the new webpage is www.qsl.net/ei5em/museum.html

The Museum is open on weekends from 11 until 4. If you are out for a drive or a walk in Howth, why not drop in. It is well worth a visit. The enthusiastic curator, Pat Herbert will be delighted to show you around. The contact telephone number is 086-8154189. It is hoped that from May next, the museum will be open every day until the end of summer. The museum deserves the support of everybody interested in the history of telecommunications, but particularly from radio amateurs.


Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend

The 2004 International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend took place over the weekend 21/22 August 2004 when over 380 lighthouse stations were established in 52 countries. A full list of stations with their details can be found at illw.net/2004_list.htm This year the event will run from 0001 UTC 20 August until 2359 UTC 21 August 2005.

Guidelines for the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend 2005 can be found at illw.net/index.html So come and join the fun and let us have over 400 stations at lighthouses or lightships.


Tipperary Amateur Radio Group

The Tipperary Amateur Radio Group will hold a meeting in Raheen House Hotel Clonmel on Wednesday the 30th March to discuss communications arrangements for the forthcoming Glen of Aherlow Walking Festival taking place on the following weekend of April 1st, 2nd and 3rd. There will be 3 separate walks on both the Saturday and Sunday; anyone wishing to help out or take part are more than welcome.


IRLP and Echolink

Use of Echolink and IRLP are now legal to use by radio amateurs in South Africa. This came with a recent announcement by the South African Minister of Communications regarding VoIP technologies.


Mills Weekend

The National Mills Weekend in the UK takes place over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of May 2005. More information can be had from www.g4cdd.net/mills.html


World Amateur Radio Day 2005

The World Amateur Radio Day 2005 Award is designed to commemorate the World Amateur Radio Day celebrated by IARU on the 18th of April each year. It is issued by the the Polish Radio Amateurs Journal, with support of PZK, The Polish Amateur Radio Union.

WARD 2005 will be granted for at least the following numbers of contacts: either 10 QSO's on HF bands, or 5 QSO's on VHF bands. All contacts must be made between 00:00 and 24:00 UTC on the 18th of April 2005. Send a standard application form (log extract), including the list of QSO's, to:

MK QTC, The Radio Amateurs' Journal, Suchacz-Zamek, Wielmozy 5b, 82-340 Tolkmicko, Poland on or before the 31st of May 2005. The price of the WARD 2005 Award is 5 US dollars or 5 euro. The WARD 2005 Award is also available to SWL's for the same numbers of reports.
