Tsunami in Asia

As the death toll continues to rise from the recent earthquake and tsunami in Asia, amateur radio operators continue to provide emergency communications from the disaster area. At 7:30 AM (01:30 UTC) December 28th electricity was being restored in Portblair and telephones were working intermittently. Bharthi, VU4RBI, operated the entire night. Most of the tourists have returned to the Indian Mainland.

Amateur Radio operations were to begin today at the Deputy Commissioner's office and additional amateurs were proceeding towards the hard hit area of Car Nicobar.

AREN The AREN training Programme commenced on December 18th last when the Introduction module was covered. This training net will continue in the new year and the next two events will take place on Saturday January 15th and on February 19th 2005, commencing at 0930. The January net will coincide with the next Kerry Amateur Radio Groups field day and will cover Voice procedures. The February net will cover message handling, and people completing all three sections of part one of the training course will be equipped to operate as emergency radio communicators. The primary frequency is 7.099MHz and the secondary frequency is 3.690Mhz.

This is members only net, however non member traffic will be taken towards the end of the event when the training session has been completed. If you have an interest in Emergency Communications please listen to the net and you are very welcome to call when invited to do so by the NCS.

Mayo Radio Experimenters Network

Results of the Mayo REN club competition for November were announced at the December meeting.

The results of the annual cumulative contest will be announced at the January meeting which will be held on Wednesday next, the 5th of January in The Meeting Room, Stensons, Ballyvary, at 9pm.


IRTS

The first IRTS Committee meeting of the New Year will be held on Saturday next January the 8th at the Killeshin Hotel in Portlaoise at 11:00.


Phoenix Amateur Radio Group

The Phoenix Amateur Radio Club Rally will take place on Sunday the 6th of February 2005 in Coolmine Community School, Blanchardstown. Doors open at 11.00 a.m. and admission is 3 euro. Doors will open for traders at 9.30 a.m. For enquiries regarding tables, phone Tony on 01-8252074.


Cork, European Capital of Culture 2005

To celebrate Cork City's status as European Capital of Culture during 2005, Cork Radio Club have introduced the Capital of Culture Award.

The award is available to all radio amateurs and shortwave listeners and to qualify you need to work or hear the special event station EI05CCC (Echo India Zero Five CCC) and either of the Cork Radio Club callsigns EI5CRC or EI1C during 2005.

Full details will appear on the Cork Radio Club website in the near future. Enquiries to Finbarr EI1CS at buckleyf1@eircom.net. All three callsigns will be activated during the coming year.


South Dublin Radio Club

The closing date for entries to the 2nd Annual SDR Photo Competition is the 11th of January 2005. Presentation of prizes will take place on the 25th of January. This Photo Competition should be every bit as successful as last years. More information can be had from the clubs web site at www.qsl.net/ei2sdr

On Tuesday the 11th of January there will be a demonstration on packet by Dave EI3IO. This will include details of the increased packet coverage in the Dublin area and the new features recently added. Visitors are more than welcome.


Kerry Amateur Radio Group

The clubs field day will be held on Saturday the 15th of January, at a location in North Kerry. Stations interested in particular grid squares in Kerry are asked to email their needs to clubinfo at kerry dot com, where it is hoped that more squares can be activated over the coming months.

Tipperary Amateur Radio Group

The Monthly 4 Metre Activity Night will be on Tuesday night next the 4th January from 20.00 to 22.00. Operators who are equipped for 70 Mhz are invited to listen out for and join in any activity on 70.2625 Mhz FM.

The next meeting of the Tipperary Amateur Radio Group will take place in Raheen House Hotel Clonmel on Wednesday next the 5th of January 2005.
