IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday February 20th 2000

East Cork News

The Annual General Meeting of the East Cork Radio Group EI7M was held last week at the Club’s premises at Power Head.

The club has been relatively inactive during the past year, the only serious activity being the IRTS Field Days.

In an effort to get more activity for the coming year, the leadership of the group was passed to the younger members with Cormac EI4HQ being elected to the position of Chairman/Secretary and John EI8IR was elected Treasurer. Denis EI6HB continues as QSL manager.

Plans are well in hand for a trip to Bere Island for the Islands On The Air Contest in late July and of course all the field days will be supported again this year.

A standing invitation is extended to any amateur who would like to get involved with the Group.

Information from Cormac at 021-814972 or on E-mail at cormac@necl.ie.

In other news from East Cork, we hear that Mike EI4HF is off on his travels again. This time he is leaving for a three week trip to Bangladesh and Cambodia where he will be working on logistics with an international aid agency.

He hopes to be on the air from both countries and information on operating times etc. can be had from Denis O’Flynn EI6HB.

WRTC 2000

Every four years an international Olympic type event is held for radio contesters. The last one was in 1996 in the San Francisco area in the United States and this year’s event is being held in Slovenia.

The aim of the event is to find the best contest operators and this is achieved by giving all competing two man teams similar stations in the same general locality. They take part in the IARU HF Championships over the second weekend in July and all teams use 100 watts, a three element Yagi and dipoles. The teams are selected from the top contesters worldwide based on average results over a range of contests.

Anybody planning a holiday in Europe this year should consider a few days in Slovenia to coincide with the WRTC.

Over one thousand amateurs are expected in the town of Bled in North West Slovenia where a wide ranging programme of events has been arranged by the organising committee. Hotel based accommodation is available for about £25 per night and prices in general seem much cheaper than we are used to.

The programme starts on Wednesday July 5th and will finish with a gala dinner on the following Monday night when the winners will be announced.

A visit to their web site is well worthwhile where all information is available. The site is wrtc2000.bit.si.
